We have enjoyed growing our own mushrooms from clean compost; calcium carbonate and spawn of Portabella, Shitake and Button Mushrooms this year. They were very productive! All winter we had fun picking, slicing and drying the mushrooms in our dehydrator and enjoying them in our recipes.

Our new project for 2007 will be to take our freshly cut logs and innoculate them with mushroom spore and wax plug the holes, then stack them to be our growing cultures.
Ever heard of vermiculture? That is another project we had this winter, growing WORMS! We purchased a special type of stackable bins to use in growing our worms on our own compost........in the house. We kept the compost moist and warm in a corner of our family room in the special stacking worm bins and fed the worms bits from our kitchen scraps, shredded newspaper, etc. The colonies of earthworms and red wigglers increased rapidly! These will be used in our gardens this spring, but, they also supplied our indoor pet birds all winter with a nutritious source of protein.
Pictures and update on this project will be done later. Keep checking back.....
Our third project for 2007 will be to build a coldframe for the back house beds; and, new pens to house our Heritage poultry and pig. Once completed we'll supply pictures on this page of the finalized projects.
